Emily Catherine Illustration: November; The Late One!
Hello all!
What a busy month, apologies for my tardiness with November's Blog Post. This month, I have done some exhibiting, printing, hospitaling, gardening and slicing!! Read on for more!
Here's a little watercolour logo I designed for Mud Press's 'Dot The Eyes' poetry night. Georgina Wilding has a wonderful, independent little publishing house and I'm lucky enough to work with her. Check out Mud Press and have a look at her events. Often, the poetry nights she hosts are actually fun and not boring. They usually involve parties, with food and music too. Not your average literary fust.
Then I exhibited at Thirtyfive Gamble Gallery at their One-Off Art Fair. The One-Off Art Fair is the most popular event at Gamble. It showcases Nottingham's incredibly talented artists from all over the city and the gallery provide good laughs, food, drink, music and a warm atmosphere. I was exhibiting my risograph print (risography done at Dizzy Ink) 'Paloma Yourself Together And Have Faith' Paloma Faith print.
They've asked me back with Paloma this Sunday (06.12.15) 12-6pm for OPEN, which is a curated collection of art, furniture, craft and ceramics. Come along and most of all, support this incredible little gallery. I mean, they have a WOODBURNER in the space. Perfect place to be on a December afternoon, genuinely.
Now, earlier in the month, I was the victim of a bit of trolling. Lovely.
Since, as I keep saying, I have only just become accustomed to social media, having never entered into it for about five years, I am naturally surprised and disappointed. However, mostly surprising is the significant amount of unwanted misogyny prevalent on the internet. I get more 'show us yer tits' requests than I do 'show us yer work' ... and I don't even gots tits. I was so furious that men were contacting me in this way, that I drew a piece to express my frustration.
It was beautifully liberating to apply the Neon 'NO' at the end. I wanted to brand her; make it permanent. Naturally, when this happens to a woman, she asks herself whether she has invited this unwanted attention, there are connotations of 'Have I got "mug" written on my forehead?' which goes through one's head.
No, she is no mug. She is woman and is to be respected, just the same as you would expect to be treated. I hope that people understand that objectification hurts. Not only that, but, particularly on the internet.
Anyway, feminist rant over, but people need to check themselves! Be stand-up! Be positive! Be lovely to each other! Stop hiding behind the screen. Be wonderful.
On a lighter note, I have been slaving away on my Ultimate Pop Advent Calendar available on this website and at Cavology Nottingham (http://www.cavology.co.uk/). Yes. I know I am late. I know. BUT they are amazing. you really should grab one. I sliced my hands up making them. I embossed them, I hand-stuck them, I bone-folded them, I punched them, I strung the thread, I spent hours designing the windows, I water-coloured the front and then risograph-printed them. It was a mammoth task and I will not be doing them again unless I can find a print place that will make it possible to print smaller runs without me having to sell a kidney.
Here's a sneak peek of my new Christmas Card design out soon:
Now for the FUN! So, I'm a big fan of a designer called Anthony Elder, who created Little Creeps NYC (http://littlecreepsnyc.com/) Little Creeps are bright colourful and have a story- they are the result of a dystopian future (think nuclear bomb, humans are obliterated, instead Little Creeps walk the earth) and they are funny, beautiful and charming all at once.
I ordered a special enamel Little Creeps pin badge, and Mr. Elder sent me a little personalised Creep sketch to thank me. Warms yer cockles, yer boggers don't it duck?
I've been toying with including this part of the blog but have relented to just bloody do it.
Those that know me well, know that I've been a bit ill for a while now. For those of you that don't, especially customers, you will have noticed a slightly lax and apologetic ebb and flow of my normally bright and punctual correspondence.
I am totally fine, nothing serious at all, but it's going to take a while for me to become 100%, so please be.... PATIENT.... GEDDIT??? HAHA!!!
This is a real treat. A REAL TREAT. Upon a recent visit to see my friend Claire who owns my favourite Nottingham clothing shop, Ursa Minor Apparel in Cobden Chambers in Nottingham (http://www.ursaminorapparel.co.uk/) I went to the shop toilet and.... discovered 'Spider on an Island'. I mean, what are the chances? That is a spider, who has found a tiny teeny little piece of loo paper to keep afloat. Naturally, Claire being the altruistic and morally strong animal lover she is, she immediately saved him from the inevitable island submergence and took him outside. But what are the chances?!
So, that's the late November blog! I hope you are all enjoying the wonderful festive countdown to your Christmas holidays, where you're allowed to eat stodgy food, use the heating and go shop in yer oneseh. Have a good one and I'll be back at the end of the month with more updates.
